SUPER GIRL REBELLION

Once upon a time in China, 400 million people watched a twenty two year old girl win a Chinese version of the American Idol and

became the Super Girl. In 2008 she was voted  as one of the nominees of the “Hero of Chinese Reform and Opening Up” (1978-2008) poll, run by the Southern Metropolis Daily,

What is striking about Li is that she sports an androgynous look and sings songs typically sung by male performers. She is often called Brother Chun and  compared to Ricky Martin and Mick Jagger in the way she dresses and moves.

Music has traditionally been identified with youth, rebellion and protests. Li’s popularity is linked to a new assertiveness in Chinese women, a new insistence on following their own dreams. In her music is the echo of the  yearning for freedom
