Just attended a disturbing and thought provoking talk on acid attacks in South Asia.
Spurned lovers throw acid on their “beloveds!” if they are rejected.
Acid is available for Rs 20-25 per bottle. The Govt put conditions on the sale of acid over the counter but it is still freely available in Madhya Pradesh and incidents in Rewa, Harda and Bhopal have been reported in the recent weeks.
The victims suffer shame and shy away from society. The culprits zip around on their motor cycles, scot free.
Bangladesh used to be the acid throwing capital of the world but strict penalty has brought down the number of these attacks considerably. India, however, is poised to take over its place.
An Oscar award winning documentary Saving Face has been aired on the issue and it deals with acid throwing in Pakistan.
